The Bridge
1751
François Boucher, the ultimate Rococo showman, painted this idyllic countryside scene where even the cows get prime real estate on top of an ancient stone bridge. Notice the young woman leaning casually against the fence—she’s the epitome of pastoral charm, completely unbothered by the dog sniffing around the water below. It’s a perfect example of 18th-century French escapism, where nature is always lush, the lighting is dreamy, and rural life looks like a stage set for a romantic picnic.
