Shepherd Piping to a Shepherdess by François Boucher, c. 1747 - 1750

François Boucher, the ultimate favorite of Madame de Pompadour, masterfully captures the flirtatious spirit of the Rococo era in this lush pastoral scene. A barefoot shepherd leans in closely, playing a flute for a shepherdess who gazes down, perhaps pretending not to notice his charm while clutching a basket of roses. It’s a perfect slice of 18th-century fantasy life—no dirt, no hard labor, just endless romance under the trees. Boucher was famous for these idealized country scenes, which were basically the 1700s version of a romantic comedy movie poster.
