The Laundress
1756
François Boucher brings a touch of Rococo charm to a humble chore in this delightful scene. Instead of a gritty depiction of labor, we see a graceful woman hanging laundry by a babbling brook, framed by a rustic, slightly collapsing wooden fence and towering trees. A mischievous child peeks out from behind the planks, adding a narrative spark to the composition. Although Boucher is best known for his mythological paintings and pastel colors, he was a prolific draftsman whose drawings were turned into popular engravings like this one, allowing the public to own a piece of his idealized, pretty version of country life.
