Woman Standing
1726-35
Wrapped in a voluminous, flowing cloak, this mysterious figure stands with her back mostly turned, looking down in a pose of quiet contemplation. Although François Boucher created this piece, the inscription 'Watteau' at the bottom reveals a fascinating connection—Boucher was essentially the ultimate fanboy of the earlier master Antoine Watteau. He produced a famous series of prints like this one to preserve Watteau's delicate drawings, effectively acting as the PR manager for the elegant, playful Rococo style.
