Passage at the Platte River by Frank Buchser, 1866

Swiss painter Frank Buchser traded European salons for the dusty trails of the American West in the 1860s, and this moody scene captures the grit of that journey perfectly. Under a heavy, brooding sky that dominates the composition, a group of pioneers pauses on the riverbank to watch their covered wagons ford the wide, grey waters of the Platte River. It’s a classic Romantic take on westward expansion—humans looking tiny and vulnerable against a vast, indifferent landscape. Buchser was actually in America to paint Civil War generals but got hooked on the frontier life instead, documenting the Oregon Trail experience with a refreshing lack of Hollywood glamour.
