The Volunteer’s Return
1867
Swiss painter Frank Buchser traveled to America during the Civil War and became fascinated by the lives of African Americans, resulting in this powerful 1867 scene. It depicts three soldiers—likely United States Colored Troops—returning home, their clothes ragged and muddy from the harsh reality of battle. Notice the vivid contrast on the fence behind them: advertisements for Steinway pianos and the actress Rose Eytinge suggest a return to civilian life and entertainment, while the soldier on the right still leans heavily on his rifle, ever vigilant. It’s a rare, dignified snapshot of freedom and the rough road to reconstruction.
