Portrait of a Young Cavalier
Frans Hals captures a confident young man in 1624, proudly declaring his age of 24 right in the corner of the canvas. Dressed in a striking black cloak with slashed sleeves and a massive, stiff white ruff collar, he places his hand over his heart in a gesture of aristocratic flair. Hals was famous for his loose, lively brushstrokes that made his subjects look like they were caught mid-motion, breaking away from the stiff portraits of his time. You can almost feel the swagger of this Dutch Golden Age cavalier just waiting to step out of the frame.
