Portrait of Isaac Abrahamsz. Massa
1626
Frans Hals captured the rosy-cheeked merchant Isaac Massa with his signature loose, lively brushstrokes, making the subject look like he's just paused mid-conversation to share a witty joke. Dressed in fashionable black with a crisp white ruff and an enormous hat, Massa casually leans on a chair while holding a sprig of holly. Hals broke the rules of stiff, formal portraiture by giving his subjects such vibrant, almost cheeky personalities that you can almost hear them laughing.
