The Serenade by Frans van Mieris the Elder, ca. 1678-80

Under the glow of a boy's torch and a sliver of moonlight, a suitor in a striking red robe and turban leans in to serenade a woman clutching a lute. Frans van Mieris the Elder, a master of the Dutch Golden Age's 'fine painting' style, captures this intimate nighttime moment with incredible detail and dramatic lighting. The scene feels like a snapshot from a romantic comedy of the 17th century, complete with a lurking companion in the shadows. Mieris was famous for his tiny, meticulously crafted panels, making this arched masterpiece a perfect example of his ability to turn everyday courtship into a theatrical event.
