Green and white horse by Franz Marc, 1913

Franz Marc, a co-founder of the German Expressionist group 'Der Blaue Reiter' (The Blue Rider), believed animals possessed a pure innocence that humans had lost. To capture this spiritual essence, he ditched realistic colors, painting this cozy, cuddling pair with one horse in a vibrant, unnatural green. The simplified, almost geometric shapes show the influence of Cubism, while the peaceful embrace contrasts sharply with the chaotic red and black surroundings. Tragically, Marc would die in World War I just a few years later, making this serene moment of animal harmony feel like a fragile, lost dream.
