Two Yellow Animals
1913
Franz Marc was obsessed with animals, believing they possessed a pure innocence that humans had long lost. In this vibrant 1913 sketch, two yellow creatures—perhaps horses or deer—intertwine playfully against bold, abstract splashes of blue and green. As a key figure in the German Expressionist group Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), Marc used color symbolically, with yellow representing feminine joy and gentleness. Tragically, Marc died in the trenches of World War I just a few years after creating this lively piece, making his joyful animal studies even more poignant today.
