Battle procession
Franz Pforr captures the gritty aftermath of a medieval clash in this energetic sketch. A fallen horse dominates the foreground, while a riderless steed wanders nearby, its sword still strapped to the saddle. In the background, a massive army snakes up a hill, contrasting with the intimate scene of soldiers tending to a wounded comrade on the right. Pforr, a key figure in the German Romantic movement and the Nazarene brotherhood, loved reviving medieval themes, though he sadly died of tuberculosis at just 24.
