Emperor Barbarossa Pl.01
1913
This vibrant 1913 illustration brings the legendary Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I, famously nicknamed 'Barbarossa' or 'Redbeard,' to life in a classic Art Nouveau style. Franz Stassen created this striking cover for a patriotic children's picture book series, showing the emperor in gleaming chainmail atop a majestic white horse, framed by ancient Roman ruins and an ornate, swirling border. It serves as a perfect snapshot of early 20th-century German nationalism, blending medieval myth with the decorative flair of the era to make history look like an epic adventure for young readers.
