Emperor Redbeard Pl.10
1913
Franz Stassen brings the legendary German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa, or 'Kaiser Rotbart,' to life in this 1913 illustration, capturing a moment of quiet contemplation. Seated at a massive stone table within a mountain cavern, the red-bearded king rests his head on his hand, seemingly lost in thought while three mysterious, hooded figures watch him from the rocky shadows. This scene taps into the famous Kyffhäuser legend, where Barbarossa sleeps for centuries, waiting for the day Germany needs him most. Stassen's Art Nouveau style shines through in the intricate, flowing patterns of the king's robes and the ornate details of his throne.
