A Cheerful Party by Franz von Defregger, 1890

Franz von Defregger was the king of painting happy Tyrolean peasants, and here he invites us into a rustic tavern for a drink. The men in their wide-brimmed hats are puffing on pipes and raising glasses, while two young women lean in with amused smiles, creating a scene of pure, unpretentious joy. This kind of 'genre painting' was huge in 19th-century Munich because people loved seeing idealized, cozy versions of rural life. Notice the dedication scribbled on the bench leg—it looks like this was a personal gift to a friend, adding a layer of intimacy to this cheerful gathering.
