Adam and Eve
ca. 1920
Franz von Stuck’s take on the original sin is far from the shy, leaf-covering couple you might expect. Here, Eve stands tall and unashamed, a massive blue serpent coiled around her body like a living accessory, its head resting on the forbidden fruit she offers to a hesitant Adam. Painted around 1920, this Symbolist masterpiece trades the lush Garden of Eden for a stark, dark void, focusing entirely on the psychological tension of the moment. Von Stuck was famous for his dark, mythological themes, and here he turns the snake into a striking, almost electric blue contrast against the pale skin of the figures.
