Pay Another Hundred Thousand Francs
In this vibrant scene, a formidable woman in a billowing yellow dress and heavy brown shawl leans across a table, gesturing emphatically at a startled young man in a blue coat. The French title translates to 'Pay another hundred thousand francs,' and the quill on the table suggests a contract or debt is being discussed. Set in a room with bright green walls and a tall red stove, the image captures a moment of comedic tension typical of 19th-century French social satire, where money matters and marriage negotiations were frequent targets for humor.
