Aurora Borealis

Aurora Borealis by Frederic Edwin Church, 1865

Frederic Edwin Church painted this dramatic Arctic scene in 1865, right at the end of the American Civil War. The glowing aurora in the sky isn't just a pretty light show—it's widely interpreted as a symbol of hope and divine intervention after years of bloody conflict. A tiny ship sits frozen in the icy waters below, dwarfed by the massive, glowing celestial display and rugged mountains, making nature look both terrifying and beautiful. Church never actually visited the Arctic; he based this masterpiece on sketches from a friend's expedition and his own imagination.
