Flaming June by Frederic Leighton, 1895

Frederic Leighton’s 1895 masterpiece captures a woman in a breathtakingly sheer, tangerine-colored gown, curled up in a deep slumber on a marble bench overlooking the sea. As a prime example of Academic art, the piece is famous for its incredible attention to the flowing fabric and the model's relaxed pose, which was actually inspired by Michelangelo's sculptures. For decades, this glowing vision of summer was considered unfashionable and nearly forgotten, only to be rediscovered and become the crown jewel of a museum in Puerto Rico.
