Light of the Harem

Light of the Harem by Frederic Leighton, c. 1880

Frederic Leighton painted this scene of opulent laziness around 1880, tapping into the Victorian obsession with the 'exotic' Orient. The tall woman, draped in shimmering silks and gold, is the 'Light of the Harem,' stretching languidly while a young page boy watches in awe. Interestingly, Leighton never actually traveled to the Middle East for this; he built the entire fantasy in his London studio using props and models. It’s a perfect example of Academic art—flawless technique, rich detail, and a whole lot of imagined drama.
