Perseus and Andromeda by Frederic Leighton, 1891

Chained to a jagged cliffside as a sacrifice, a terrified Andromeda cowers beneath the looming, shell-backed sea monster sent to devour her. Her white drapery slips away, highlighting her vulnerability against the dark, churning waters below. But salvation is at hand—high above in the radiant sky, the hero Perseus swoops down on his winged horse, Pegasus, ready to slay the beast and claim his bride. Leighton masterfully captures the dramatic tension of this Greek myth, contrasting the monstrous darkness below with the divine light of the rescuer above.
