The promenade
Kaemmerer transports us straight to the gossip-heavy terraces of post-Revolutionary Paris, likely the Luxembourg Gardens. Here we see the famous 'Merveilleuses' and 'Incroyables'—the trendsetters of the French Directory era—showing off their wild fashion. The woman in red is leaning in to whisper a scandalous secret, while the man in the oversized bicorne hat and ridiculous striped stockings poses with the confidence of a peacock. It’s a vibrant snapshot of a society trying to forget the guillotine through sheer extravagance.
