Bijutsukai Pl.113 by Furuya Kōrin, 1901

Published in the art magazine Bijutsukai in 1901, this piece by Furuya Kōrin splits the composition into two distinct poetic worlds. The top section bursts with a bamboo forest decorated for Tanabata, the Star Festival, where colorful paper streamers hang like festive confetti among the green leaves. A band of swirling, hypnotic lines separates this from the bottom scene, a dreamy pink seascape where bold blue waves crash around stylized pine trees and white sails. As a leader of the Rinpa revival, Kōrin turned these classic nature motifs into rhythmic patterns perfect for textile designs.
