Bijutsukai Pl.129
1901
Furuya Kōrin's 1901 illustration is a feast for the eyes — a rhythmic dance of samurai helmet ornaments floating against a lush backdrop of green leaf-patterned panels. The tan-colored kabuto decorations, including fierce lion-dog masks and stylized crests, seem to tumble playfully across the composition like relics of ancient warriors caught mid-fall. Kōrin, a master of the Rinpa revival, transforms what could be a dry catalog of armor parts into something almost musical, with the bold black bands and repeating foliage creating a hypnotic visual beat. This plate appeared in Bijutsukai, a prestigious Japanese art magazine that helped introduce traditional decorative arts to modern audiences at the turn of the century.
