Bijutsukai Pl.165
1901
Imagine a vineyard where the grapes aren't the only harvest—here, traditional Japanese books have tumbled among the leaves! Created by Furuya Kōrin in 1901 for the art magazine *Bijutsukai*, this piece showcases the Rinpa revival style, a movement Kōrin championed (he even took his name from the legendary master Ogata Kōrin). The deep indigo background makes the pale green grapevines and scattered manuscripts pop with vibrant contrast. The books, adorned with delicate maple leaves and bamboo patterns, blend the world of literature with nature's bounty in a way that feels surprisingly modern for the turn of the century.
