Bijutsukai Pl.69 by Furuya Kōrin, 1901

Furuya Kōrin, a master of the decorative Rinpa style, created this delightful illustration for the 1901 art magazine Bijutsukai. The composition is split into two magical realms: above, elegant red-crowned cranes soar through swirling, stylized grey clouds, while below, a flock of cheerful yellow chicks bobs along a classic blue wave pattern dotted with cherry blossom petals. It's a perfect example of how traditional Japanese motifs were kept fresh and vibrant during the Meiji period, blending ancient symbolism with a charming, almost playful aesthetic that still feels incredibly modern today.
