Bijutsukai Pl.87
1901
Floating against a serene, icy blue sky, three large, jagged snowflakes dance amidst elegant, swirling wind currents and scattered dark dots. The entire scene is framed by a warm, textured beige border featuring faint, ghostly snowflakes, creating a beautiful contrast between the crisp winter chill and a cozy, paper-like warmth. Created in 1901 by Furuya Kōrin for the influential Japanese art magazine Bijutsukai (Art World), this piece perfectly captures the decorative elegance of the Rinpa tradition. Kōrin, a master of Nihonga, took the classic stylized nature motifs of his predecessors and gave them a fresh, modern twist for the turn of the century, turning a simple winter scene into a mesmerizing graphic pattern.
