Landscape at Saint-Ouen
1878
Before he became the king of tiny dots, a teenage Georges Seurat was busy capturing the moody, industrial edges of Paris in 1878. This early landscape of Saint-Ouen reveals a much looser, almost melancholic style, featuring murky waters and dark, scribbled brushstrokes that hint at factories looming on the distant horizon. It is fascinating to see the future founder of Pointillism experimenting with raw, sweeping strokes of oil paint long before he perfected his famous scientific technique, showing us that even the greatest innovators start with messy, beautiful experiments.
