The Gardener
1882-83
Before Georges Seurat became the king of tiny dots (Pointillism), he was busy experimenting with light and color in lush, green landscapes like this one. Painted in the early 1880s, 'The Gardener' shows a figure bent over at work, their white shirt glowing against the vibrant, dappled foliage. Notice how the face is completely hidden? Seurat was more interested in how sunlight played across the back of the gardener's shirt and the surrounding leaves than in capturing a specific person's identity. It's a perfect snapshot of an artist on the verge of revolutionizing how we see color, trading traditional blending for energetic, separate brushstrokes that make the whole scene shimmer.
