A Young Woman at Her Toilet with a Maid
ca. 1650-51
Step into a quiet 17th-century bedroom where a young woman in a shimmering pink skirt is caught in a private moment of getting dressed. She adjusts her bodice while her maid stands patiently behind her, balancing a gleaming silver pitcher on a tray—a subtle flex of the family's wealth common in Dutch genre paintings. This 'toilet' scene refers to the fashionable ritual of grooming and dressing, not the bathroom! The heavy red curtains of the box bed loom in the background, creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere typical of Baroque art that loved to peek into everyday domestic life.
