Christ Crowned with Thorns by Gerard van Honthorst, about 1620

Gerard van Honthorst earned the nickname 'Gherardo delle Notti' (Gerard of the Nights) for his mastery of dramatic, artificial lighting, and this scene is a textbook example. A kneeling soldier thrusts a blazing torch toward a seated, suffering Christ, while another figure looms behind to place the crown of thorns. This intense chiaroscuro—strong contrasts between light and dark—was a style Honthorst picked up from Caravaggio in Rome and brought back to the Netherlands. The result feels less like a holy icon and more like a gritty, underground theatrical performance, capturing the raw cruelty of the moment.
