Granida and Daifilo

Gerard van Honthorst

1652

Granida and Daifilo by Gerard van Honthorst, 1652

In this lush Baroque scene, a shepherd named Daifilo gazes adoringly at Princess Granida, who has traded her royal life for the simple joys of the countryside—complete with a flower crown and a very exposed neckline. But their romantic picnic is about to be ruined; if you look closely at the background, you'll see armored soldiers creeping through the trees, sent by her father to drag her back to reality. Honthorst, famous for his dramatic candlelight scenes (earning him the nickname 'Gerard of the Night'), here uses bright daylight to highlight the tension between innocent love and impending duty, surrounded by some very realistically painted goats that seem completely unbothered by the drama.
