(Song Dynasty Copy) Nymph of the Luo River Scroll (Volume 1) - Main Painting 3
Based on a famous poem by Cao Zhi, this scroll captures the tragic moment the Goddess of the Luo River departs from her mortal lover. On the left, she rides away in a fantastical dragon-drawn chariot pulled by mythical beasts, while on the far right, the heartbroken poet and his attendants watch helplessly from the shore. Although the original 4th-century masterpiece by Gu Kaizhi is lost, this Song Dynasty copy showcases his signature 'silkworm' brushstrokes—fine, continuous lines that give the figures an ethereal, floating quality. It’s essentially an ancient cinematic storyboard of a supernatural romance!
