Musical Group by Candlelight
1623
Gerard van Honthorst was so famous for painting scenes lit by candlelight that Italians nicknamed him 'Gherardo delle Notti'—Gerard of the Nights. In this lively scene, a group of merry musicians gathers around a table, their faces glowing with the warm, dramatic light of a hidden candle. You can almost hear them singing along to the lute player on the right, caught in a moment of pure, boisterous joy. This is a classic example of the Utrecht Caravaggisti style, where Dutch artists brought the dramatic lighting of Caravaggio back home from Italy to create these intimate, glowing moments.
