Die Flohjagd
Gerard van Honthorst, famously nicknamed 'Gherardo of the Nights' by the Italians for his mastery of artificial light, brings a theatrical glow to this cheeky scene. A radiant young woman, her skin glowing against the darkness, smiles coyly while an older, hunched figure—likely a madam—inspects her chest. While the title suggests a simple 'Flea Hunt,' in the Dutch Golden Age, this was a winking euphemism for intimacy or a brothel encounter. The dramatic chiaroscuro, with deep shadows swallowing the background, shows Honthorst's deep love for Caravaggio's style, which he brought back to Utrecht after studying in Rome.
