Susanna and the Elders

1614

Peter Paul Rubens brings the biblical tale of Susanna to life with his signature Baroque flair, capturing a moment of intense drama and vulnerability. Two lecherous elders creep up behind the bathing beauty, shamelessly pulling at her sheer white drapery while she looks back in sheer alarm. Notice the cheeky parrot perched on the fountain nearby—it's a classic Rubens detail that adds a touch of exotic flair to this tense, voyeuristic scene. Painted in 1614, this masterpiece perfectly showcases the artist's love for lush, fleshy figures and dynamic, storytelling compositions.
