A Hermit by Gerrit Dou, 1664

Rembrandt’s first pupil, Gerrit Dou, was a 'fijnschilder'—a fine painter known for microscopic detail—and this elderly hermit is a perfect example. Huddled in a cave-like nook beneath a gnarled tree, the bearded figure clutches a crucifix and peers through spectacles at a book, with an hourglass ticking away nearby. It’s a classic 'memento mori' scene, reminding us that time is short, even for holy men. Legend says Dou was so obsessed with detail he once spent three days painting a single broom handle, so you can imagine the patience required for that magnificent white beard!
