George Pollock
1793-1794
Meet George Pollock, looking rather pleased with himself in this 1790s portrait by Gilbert Stuart. You might know Stuart as the guy who painted the George Washington on the one-dollar bill. Notice the ink bottles and quill on the red-draped table? They tell us Pollock was a man of intellect, perhaps a writer or politician, captured in the dignified style of Neoclassicism. Stuart was famous for his loose brushwork and dark backgrounds that force you to look right at those rosy cheeks and knowing eyes. Fun fact: Stuart was a bit of a financial disaster and painted hundreds of Washingtons just to keep his creditors at bay!
