Porträt von Edward Loftus
1790
Gilbert Stuart, the artist famous for painting the George Washington on the dollar bill, captured this Irish judge with a distinctively rosy glow that became his signature style. Painted around 1790 during Stuart's time in Dublin, the subject sports a fashionable powdered wig and a crisp white cravat that pops against his dark blue coat. Stuart was a bit of a charmer and a procrastinator, often leaving canvases unfinished, but here he delivers a sharp, dignified likeness of Edward Loftus against a moody, cloud-filled sky. It's a great example of how American artists were making waves in Europe before heading back home to paint the founding fathers.
