Il Viceammiraglio Edward Hughes by Gilbert Stuart, 1780s

Gilbert Stuart, the American artist famous for painting George Washington's face on the dollar bill, captured Vice-Admiral Edward Hughes looking incredibly dapper in the 1780s. Hughes is decked out in a spectacular navy coat dripping with heavy gold braiding and a bold red sash, looking every bit the powerful naval commander. Despite the moody, stormy sky behind him, his rosy cheeks and slight smile suggest a man who is quite comfortable in his own skin—and probably enjoys a good meal. It’s a perfect example of 18th-century status signaling, showing off wealth and rank with maximum flair.
