Allegory of Fiesole
1563 - 1565
Giorgio Vasari, the ultimate Renaissance multitasker who literally wrote the book on art history, created this dramatic scene to honor the landscape of Fiesole. A burly, bearded river god reclines in the foreground, his muscular form contrasting with the elegant female figure beside him who holds a banner marked with a crescent moon. Above them, a chubby putto flies through the cloudy sky, adding a sense of divine movement to the composition. It’s a fantastic example of Late Renaissance style, where mythological characters were used to turn local geography into something majestic and powerful.
