Niobe

Niobe by Giovanni Battista Cipriani, 1772

Designed by Giovanni Battista Cipriani and engraved by the famous Francesco Bartolozzi in 1772, this print captures the tragic figure of Niobe from Greek mythology. Niobe famously boasted about her many children, only to lose them all to the arrows of Apollo and Artemis, eventually weeping until she turned to stone. Here, she is depicted in a moment of anguish, her hand clutching her chest as she gazes upward in despair. Dedicated to William Lock, this neoclassical piece beautifully illustrates the dramatic emotion and classical themes that were all the rage in 18th-century British art.
