Perseus, Having Rescued Andromeda

Perseus, Having Rescued Andromeda by Giovanni Battista Cipriani, 1788

Here, the hero Perseus—identifiable by his winged sandals and helmet—swoops in to unchain the princess Andromeda from a rock. She was sacrificed to a sea monster thanks to her mother's bragging, but she looks surprisingly chill about the whole rescue. Cipriani’s 1788 Neoclassical style gives the scene a clean, sculptural look, emphasizing idealized bodies and dramatic gestures. It’s a classic 'damsel in distress' moment, but rendered with such elegance that you almost forget the giant sea monster is probably still lurking nearby.
