Titian's Schoolmaster
c. 1575
Legend has it this stern-looking scholar was actually the teacher of the great master Titian! Giovanni Battista Moroni paints him with incredible honesty, skipping the usual flattery to show a real, thinking human being. Clutching a small book and wearing a distinctive black cap, he stares right at you with an intensity that feels almost modern. Moroni was famous for these 'psychological' portraits that made his sitters look like they were about to speak, bridging the gap between Renaissance idealism and modern realism.
