A Group of Punchinelli Seated by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, ca. 1760

Tiepolo had a lifelong fascination with Punchinello, the hunchbacked trickster of Italian comedy, often using him to satirize the art world. In this lively sketch, a gang of these white-clad clowns are huddled together, pointing and whispering as if hatching a chaotic scheme. The rapid, fluid strokes of brown ink and wash capture their movement perfectly, showing off the artist's incredible speed and wit. It’s a playful contrast to the grand, serious frescoes he was famous for, revealing a mischievous side to the Rococo master.
