Aged Dignitary Attended by Mercury and Prudence
1696-1770
Giovanni Battista Tiepolo brings a burst of Rococo energy to this lively sketch, where an elderly dignitary gets some serious divine VIP treatment. Look closely at the winged figure of Mercury dramatically pointing skyward, while Prudence stands by with her trusty mirror and snake. Tiepolo was a master of these rapid, expressive drawings, often using them as quick brainstorming sessions before tackling massive ceiling frescoes. The loose, scribbly ink lines capture the movement and drama perfectly, showing us exactly how a genius's mind worked in real-time.
