Flight into Egypt
1725-1735
Tiepolo is famous for his grand frescoes, but his drawings reveal his raw, sketchy energy. Here, he tackles the classic 'Flight into Egypt' scene, but instead of a solemn, static pose, it feels like a hurried snapshot of a frantic escape. The boatman leans hard into his pole while a winged angel practically shoves Mary and baby Jesus toward the water. Those loose, scribbly brown ink lines capture the urgency of the moment perfectly, showing how the Rococo master could tell a whole story with just a few swift strokes.
