Queen of Port City Receiving Envoys
1696-1770
Before painting his massive, ceiling-spanning masterpieces, Giovanni Battista Tiepolo would sketch out ideas with incredible energy, just like we see here. A regal queen sits on the left, looking poised as a ragtag group of envoys shuffles toward her, their robes flowing in those signature loose, scratchy lines. As the last great master of the Venetian school, Tiepolo used these quick Rococo drawings to capture the drama of a scene before committing to canvas. It feels less like a finished product and more like a snapshot of the artist's mind at work, proving that even grand historical epics start with a simple scribble.
