The Carpet Seller
Giulio Rosati invites us into a richly textured world of commerce, where every surface is draped in vibrant, intricate rugs that seem to spill off the walls and floor. The standing figure in pristine white robes appears deep in thought—perhaps haggling over the price of the finest weave—while a bearded elder relaxes with a pipe, embodying the slow pace of the bazaar. Interestingly, while these scenes look like authentic snapshots of daily life in North Africa, Rosati painted most of them from the comfort of his studio in Rome, relying on costumes and props to capture the exotic allure of the Orientalist movement.
