The Market Square
Giulio Rosati transports us straight into a sun-drenched North African marketplace with this lively scene. In the foreground, a bearded merchant in a red fez seems to be deep in negotiation with a cloaked figure, perhaps haggling over the colorful beads he holds. Nearby, a young boy clutches a bundle of palm fronds, watching the adults with wide-eyed curiosity while others lounge in the shade. Rosati was a master of the Orientalist genre, capturing the textures of the flowing robes and the dusty heat of the square with incredible precision.
